If you want to use the necklaces in their traditional way, you take the necklace in your hand and start saying the mantra or affirmation at the first bead in a counterclockwise direction. Repeat the mantra on each bead until you reach the end of the chain.
The bottom bead - the guru bead is left out because the energy of the prayer goes into the bead and tassel.
You can also, for example, breathe in and out once with each bead instead of a mantra. This practice can help reduce stress.
